Minus forty is a system requirement. A home system here has to assume the power flickers, the internet drops, and the garage is far colder than the living room. That’s why we build local-first: the automations that matter — heat, lighting, water shut-off — run on hardware inside your house and don’t wait on a server in another province.
Long winters change what automation is for. Around the winter solstice, Saskatoon gets roughly seven and a half hours of daylight. Lighting that follows sunrise and sunset genuinely changes how a house feels in a way it simply doesn’t in a milder, brighter climate.

- If you rent and can’t change wiring, plug-in and battery devices will get you most of the way. We’ll happily point you at what works and leave it there.
- If everything you own is already in one ecosystem and you’re happy, don’t let anyone talk you out of it. Our value is integration; if there’s nothing to integrate, there’s no value.
- If your real problem is WiFi, fix that first. Roughly speaking, most “my smart home is unreliable” complaints are a network problem wearing a costume.
Where we earn our fee is the harder case: several systems, several brands, people in the house with different tolerance for fiddling, and a result that has to be reliable enough that nobody thinks about it.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to replace the smart devices I already own?
Usually not. The platform we build on integrates devices across thousands of brands, so most of what you own can join the system instead of going in a drawer. Some cloud-only devices genuinely can’t be integrated, and we’ll tell you which ones during the assessment rather than after the invoice.
What happens when the internet goes out?
Your local automations keep running — lights, schedules, heat, and leak response all continue, because they run on hardware in your home rather than on a server somewhere. What stops is remote access from outside the house and any notifications to your phone; both resume by themselves when the connection returns.
Is this the same as Alexa or Google Home?
Not quite. Those are cloud assistants — the request travels to a data centre and back. What we build keeps the decision-making in your house, and it can work alongside Alexa or Google if you like using them. The difference is where your home’s intelligence actually lives, and who can switch it off.
Do I need a subscription?
No subscription is required to run your home or see your own cameras. You own the hardware and the recordings. Some optional extras — remote access services, or monitored alarm response — are genuinely separate paid services, and we’ll tell you plainly when one is worth it and when it isn’t.
Can renters or condo owners do this?
Yes. There are plenty of options that don’t involve changing wiring, and we design around what you’re allowed to modify. If your constraints mean the honest answer is “buy three devices and skip the install,” we’ll say that too.
What if KeenAI weren’t around in five years?
Your system is built on open standards and you own the hardware, so it keeps running, and any competent professional could take it over. That’s deliberate — a system you can only ever get serviced by us is a system that holds you hostage, and we don’t build those.
Is this an alarm system?
No. A home automation system is not a certificated, monitored alarm. It doesn’t qualify for insurance discounts, and it can’t guarantee emergency dispatch.
