Smart Outdoor: Irrigation, Lighting & Yard Tech for Saskatoon Homes

Smart outdoor technology means a yard that waters around the forecast instead of in the rain, lights itself at dusk without anyone remembering, and stays on your network all the way to the back fence. KeenAI installs the controls, lighting, cameras and connectivity that make it happen — built for a climate with a short, intense summer and a hard freeze at the end of it.

The reality

The season is shortAutomation is how you actually get to enjoy it

Saskatoon’s frost-free window is a matter of months, not seasons. Everything outdoors here happens in a hurry — and then it’s over. That compresses the value of anything that removes friction from the yard: watering that adjusts itself, lights that come on at the right time in a summer where “dusk” moves by hours across the season, and a network that reaches the deck and the shop.

The sprinkler running during a rainstorm is the cliché for a reason. It’s also the easiest thing on this page to fix.

What we install

Controls, light, coverage and connection

Smart irrigation controllers

A controller swap makes an existing sprinkler system weather-aware — it checks the forecast and local conditions and skips the cycle it doesn’t need, instead of watering on a fixed schedule regardless.

Landscape & security lighting

Low-voltage path, garden and architectural lighting that follows dusk through the season, tied into the same scenes as your indoor lighting.

Outdoor cameras & doorbells

Coverage of yards, RV pads, back lanes and detached buildings, recorded locally on hardware you own. See security & access control.

Outdoor WiFi to the back fence

The deck, the shop, the garage and the camera at the gate. Wired where we can, point-to-point where we can’t — the most common outdoor request we get. See WiFi & networking.

Holiday lighting control

Switched circuits and scheduling so seasonal lighting isn’t a timer nobody can reach in December, and shutting it down is one tap rather than a trip outside.

Seasonal changeover reminders

Automation that flags the transitions — freeze warnings, end-of-season shutdown, spring start-up — so the calendar doesn’t depend on anyone remembering.

What we build toward

Light the house, not the sky

Landscape lighting done properly is aimed: uplights washing the stone, low path lights at the walkway, and nothing glaring back at the street or into a bedroom window. Put it on the same system as everything else and it tracks sunset through the year instead of a timer you reset twice a season. Illustrative photograph, not one of our installations — our own project photos are marked “from our work”.

How it works hereEverything outdoors is built around the freeze

Freeze-up is the design constraint. Anything that holds water outdoors has a hard deadline every autumn, and anything that stays out has to survive months well below freezing. That shapes what we’ll install where, and it’s why we’re direct about which parts of a yard system are electronics and which are plumbing.

Dusk moves a long way here. Between midsummer and the shoulder seasons, sunset shifts by hours. A fixed timer that suits July is wrong by September, which is exactly why outdoor lighting should follow sunset rather than the clock.

Detached buildings are normal. Garages, shops, quonsets and long driveways are routine on local properties, and they’re usually where the network gives up. Getting coverage out there is often the thing that makes the cameras and controls work at all.

Spring melt and runoff. Water moving around a property in March is a Saskatchewan reality, and sensors that tell you what’s happening near the foundation pair naturally with leak detection and shut-off indoors.

The honest part

Where we stop, and who you actually need

Outdoor work crosses trades, and we’d rather be clear about the line than vague about it.

  • We do the controls, the electronics and the low-voltage side — controllers, lighting, cameras, network, scheduling and integration.
  • Sprinkler pipe work, head replacement and seasonal blow-out are irrigation-trade work. Tell us what you have and we’ll tell you honestly which parts of your job are ours and which need a specialist, before you book anything.
  • If your sprinkler system is sound, you may only need a controller. That’s a small job with a genuinely good return, and it doesn’t need a whole project wrapped around it.
  • Watering restrictions and utility rebates change. Check current City of Saskatoon guidance for the season rather than trusting any contractor’s website — including this one — to be up to date.

Where people usually start

Every outdoor job is priced for your property at the free assessment — a fixed quote before any work begins. Yard work varies too much with property size, existing wiring and building layout for a published price to mean anything.

Smart Irrigation Retrofit

fixed quote on site

Weather-aware controller fitted to your existing sprinkler system, zones mapped and labelled, schedules set and connected to the rest of your system.

Front-Yard Light & Watch (most popular)

fixed quote on site

Landscape and path lighting on dusk scheduling, plus camera coverage of the drive and entry, recorded locally and reachable from one app.

Full Outdoor

custom quote

Lighting, irrigation control, camera coverage and network out to detached buildings and the property line, integrated with the rest of the home.

Timing it right

  1. Spring is for irrigation. Controller work makes sense as the system comes up for the season, so you get the benefit across the whole summer rather than the tail of it.
  2. Late summer and fall are for lighting. Install in September and you see the result at five o’clock that same week. Trenching and low-voltage runs also go in far more easily before the ground hardens.
  3. Network and cameras, any time the ground allows. Attached-building work is year-round; anything needing a trench wants unfrozen ground.

Electrical work — outdoor circuits and any line-voltage work are performed to code by licensed contractor partners.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make my existing sprinkler system smart?

Usually, yes — and it’s often just a controller swap, which is one of the better-value jobs on this page. The new controller reads the forecast and skips cycles it doesn’t need instead of watering on a fixed schedule. The free assessment confirms your valves and wiring are compatible before you commit to anything.

Will landscape lighting survive winter here?

Yes, when it’s rated for the climate, buried at proper depth and connected with fittings meant for it. Nearly every failed landscape lighting job we’re called to look at failed at a connection or a shallow run rather than at the fixture.

Can you get WiFi to my detached garage or shop?

Yes. It’s the most common outdoor request we get. Wired if the building is attached or we can trench to it, point-to-point wireless if not — and rural properties with long distances between buildings are routine for us.

Do you handle sprinkler blow-out and pipe repairs?

Those are irrigation-trade work rather than controls work. We’re happy to tell you exactly which parts of your project are ours and which need a specialist — before you book, not after. If all you need is a controller, we’ll say that too.

When is the best time to do outdoor work?

Spring for irrigation, so you get the whole season’s benefit. Late summer or fall for lighting — you see the result immediately as evenings draw in, and low-voltage runs go in much more easily before the ground freezes.

Does outdoor equipment need its own subscription?

No. Controllers, lighting and cameras run on hardware you own, and your recordings stay yours. Nothing we install requires a monthly fee to keep working.
