Smart Outdoor Living in Saskatoon: Irrigation, Lighting & Pool
A yard that waters around the forecast, lights itself at sunset, warms the patio when you step out and clears the driveway when it snows — in the same app as the rest of the house.
- Locally owned, Saskatoon
- Works with Rachio, Rain Bird & Hunter
- Pool, patio and driveway in one app
What is a smart outdoor system?
A smart outdoor system connects the things outside your walls — sprinklers, landscape and patio lighting, the pool or hot tub, patio heaters, a driveway snowmelt, gates and outdoor speakers — to one app and one set of rules. It waters when the yard needs it, lights to the sunset and warns you before the cold does damage.
Here, every outdoor system is built around the freeze. Anything that holds water has a hard deadline every autumn, and anything that stays outside has to survive months well below zero. We’re direct about which parts of a yard are electronics, and which are plumbing.
- Irrigation that reads the weatherA rain sensor and the forecast skip a watering before it starts.
- Lighting tied to sunsetRight in June and in December, without touching a timer.
- Pool and hot tubWater temperature, pump and heater beside the rest of the house.
- Controls, not pipesSprinkler pipe work and blow-outs go to irrigation contractors.
The whole yard, in the app you already use
The garden, the patio and the things that draw power outside each have their own screen, next to the lights, heat and locks indoors.
Garden
Path lights and tree uplights at the level you like, on at sunset.
Patio
String lights, the wall wash and the awning, set for the evening in one tap.
Outdoor power
Patio heaters, the water feature, irrigation and the EV charger, switched from one list.
Real screens from KeenAi One, running our demo home.
Water the yard, not the rain
A smart irrigation controller replaces the timer in your garage and runs each zone on what the yard actually needs. It’s one of the best-value upgrades outdoors — as long as the pipes and heads underneath are sound.
Rain skip
A rain sensor stops a cycle when the yard is wet, and the forecast can skip one before it starts.
Zones by need
Lawn, beds and trees on their own schedules, early in the morning when less water is lost to sun and wind.
No false leak alarms
With flow watch, KeenAi One treats irrigation as expected water. A wet leak sensor is never ignored.
Season-aware
Shut the system down for winter from the app. The blow-out itself is the irrigation contractor’s job, and we’ll say so.
| Controller | Good fit | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Rachio | Replacing the timer on most existing home systems. | Wi-Fi controller with weather-based scheduling. |
| Rain Bird | Homes that already have a Rain Bird controller. | Many existing Rain Bird controllers can take a Wi-Fi module instead of being replaced. |
| Hunter Hydrawise | Systems installed by irrigation contractors who use Hunter. | Hunter’s Wi-Fi platform, managed from one app. |
| The one you have | A Wi-Fi controller that already works. | If it integrates, we bring it into KeenAi One rather than replace it. |
The pool, beside the rest of the house
KeenAi One reads and controls Hayward AquaLogic pool controllers directly, over their own wired connection: water temperature, filter pump and heater, next to everything else in your home. Pentair ScreenLogic and Jandy iAquaLink systems can be brought in too.
Ask “Is the pool heater running?” and KeenAi answers from the pool controller. See it in the Demo Home tour.
- At a glanceWater temperature, heater and filter, without walking to the equipment pad.
- Ready when you areHeat the pool or hot tub before you get home.
- Honest readingsWater temperature is only current while the pump runs, and the app treats it that way.
- Pool service stays with the prosPlumbing, equipment repair and chemistry belong to your pool company.
Gate, garage, lights and snow
- Gate and garage with Open, Stop and Close, and their state always shown.
- Driveway lights on when the gate opens after dark.
- Snowmelt on the forecast, not on a guess — and off again when the job is done.
- Cameras on the approach, covered on our security page.

Four seasons, one system
Outdoors in Saskatchewan, the calendar is the design brief. This is the kind of year we set a yard up for.
Back on
Irrigation comes back for the season with every zone checked, and a schedule built around the forecast.
Long evenings
Watering before sunrise, lights after half past nine, patio heaters for the cool nights.
Before the freeze
Lights come on earlier as dusk moves. Irrigation shuts down and the blow-out gets booked.
Snow and cold
Snowmelt when snow is forecast, the gate and garage at −35°C, lights on before five.
At the lake
The yard lights on a believable pattern, cameras watch, and alerts reach your phone.
Everything outside your walls, controlled from one place
Smart irrigation controllers
Rachio, Rain Bird and Hunter, with zones, rain skip and forecasts.
Landscape & path lighting
Low-voltage lighting design for paths, trees and facades, on at sunset.
Patio & deck
String lights, wall wash, awnings and the scenes that set them for an evening.
Pool & hot tub
Hayward AquaLogic, Pentair and Jandy controllers in the same app as the house.
Patio heaters
Electric heaters on when you step out, from the app or as part of an evening scene.
Snowmelt & heated surfaces
Driveways, walks and steps switched with the forecast. Electrical work by licensed partners.
Gates & garage
Open, close and always know the state, with lights on arrival.
Outdoor audio & cameras
Weather-rated speakers and cold-rated cameras. See audio and security.
Wi-Fi to the back fence
Coverage for the yard, the shop and the garage. See Wi-Fi & networking.
Everything outdoors is built around the freeze
Freeze-up is a deadline
Anything outdoors that holds water has to be shut down and cleared before the hard freeze, every year. The controller can remind you; the blow-out is booked with an irrigation contractor.
Dusk moves a long way
Sunset shifts by more than four and a half hours between June and December. Lighting that follows the sunset is right all year; a timer set in July is wrong by September.
Rated for minus forty
Controllers, lights, cameras and speakers that stay outside are chosen by their rated temperatures. Anything that can’t take a Saskatchewan winter lives indoors.

Who you actually need, and when
Outdoor work crosses trades, and we’d rather be clear about the line than vague about it. Tell us what you have and we’ll tell you which parts of the job are ours before you book anything.
What we do
- Controllers, lighting, cameras, network and audio.
- Scheduling, scenes and integration in KeenAi One.
- Outdoor circuits and line-voltage work, done to code by licensed electrical partners.
What goes to a specialist
- Sprinkler pipe work, head replacement and seasonal blow-outs: an irrigation contractor.
- Pool plumbing, equipment repair and water chemistry: your pool company.
- If your sprinkler system is sound, you may only need a controller — a small job with a good return.

Smart irrigation & outdoor: frequently asked questions
Is a smart sprinkler controller worth it?
Usually, yes. It replaces the timer, skips watering when it rains or rain is forecast, and lets you change a zone from your phone. If your system has leaks or broken heads, fix those first — a smart controller can’t water well through a broken pipe.
Can my sprinklers skip watering when it rains?
Yes. A rain sensor stops a cycle when the yard is wet, and the forecast can skip one before it starts. Both are set up with the controller in KeenAi One.
When should I blow out my sprinklers in Saskatoon?
Before the first hard freeze. For most Saskatoon yards that means booking it in the fall, once watering is done and before the lines can freeze. Blow-outs are irrigation-contractor work; we shut the controller down for the season.
Do you handle sprinkler blow-outs and pipe repairs?
Those are irrigation-trade work rather than controls work. We’re happy to tell you exactly which parts of your project are ours and which need a specialist — before you book, not after. If all you need is a controller, we’ll say that too.
Can landscape lights turn on at sunset automatically?
Yes. Outdoor lights can follow the actual sunset every day, which moves by more than four and a half hours between June and December in Saskatoon, so they’re never on in daylight or late in the dark.
Can I control my pool or hot tub from my phone?
Yes, if the equipment has a controller we can connect to. KeenAi One works with Hayward AquaLogic controllers directly, and Pentair ScreenLogic and Jandy iAquaLink systems can be brought in, showing water temperature, pump and heater next to the rest of the house.
Can a heated driveway turn on by itself?
Yes. A snowmelt system can switch on when snow is forecast and off again when the job is done, instead of running all day. The heating and its electrical work are installed by licensed contractors; we do the control.
Can I open my gate or garage door from my phone?
Yes, with its state always shown, so you know whether it’s open. Open, Stop and Close sit next to the driveway lights in KeenAi One.
Will outdoor equipment survive −40?
Only equipment rated for it. We choose outdoor controllers, lights, cameras and speakers by their rated temperatures, and keep anything that can’t take a Saskatchewan winter indoors or in a heated space.
Will watering set off my leak alarm?
No. KeenAi One knows irrigation is expected water, so flow watch doesn’t treat a watering cycle as a leak. A wet leak sensor is never ignored, though.
When is the best time to do outdoor work?
Spring for irrigation, so you get the whole season’s benefit. Late summer or fall for lighting — you see the result immediately as evenings draw in, and low-voltage runs go in much more easily before the ground freezes.
Can the yard look lived-in while we’re away?
Yes. Outdoor and indoor lights can follow a believable pattern while you’re at the lake, with cameras watching and alerts on your phone.
Does outdoor equipment need its own subscription?
No. Controllers, lighting and cameras run on hardware you own, and your recordings stay yours.
